People and Cameras

I feel more comfortable behind the camera. I've always been kinda of shy and getting my picture taken makes me feel uncomfortable, so to be behind the camera always made me feel more at ease. I like to be in control and being behind the camera gives me that control to take the pictures that I want. I've always wanted to be the person that blended in and didn't get noticed and being photographed makes you stand out so I never really enjoyed it. Being behind the camera keeps me out of the spotlight, but I get to create that feeling for someone else.

Photojournalism Ethics

I found this article very interesting. The information in the article is not new to me because I have taken the media law class here at UWM and have had this discussion many times in that class. Each time I think about this topic, I find it hard to always come to the same conclusions. I do think that there are certain situations where privacy has to be upheld, but I think that people need to be more aware of the fact that if they are in public and in plain view they have no expectation of privacy. I agree that journalists to overstep their boundaries in a lot of situations, and I think that more solid rules need to be put in place and those actions need to be stopped by the courts. After reading the article, I think that the author could have done a little better job talking about the areas of privacy law. From my experience from the law class, we learned that it is very difficult for the courts to rule against the media because of the way the laws are written. For example, in false light privacy, the court would have to prove that the journalists acted "with reckless regard". I still haven't figured out how to prove that.

Photo Essay - Caribbean Cruise

"This is a picture taken from the top of our ship looking down at Key West, Florida. My friend had just gotten married and we were getting ready to port for the afternoon. "

"This is a picture of the beach in Cozumel, Mexico. This was taken shortly after we had gone snorkeling and clear water kayaking! I wish I could be back there right now. "

"This is a picture of the ship that I lived on for 5 days. We were in Cozumel, Mexico when I took this and I couldn't wait to get into the air conditioning after a long day of shopping and beach activities in the 95 degree heat of Mexico. "

"This picture was taken during our day at see. It took about a day and a half to get from Cozumel to Cococay and this was a picture of the ocean right before sunset. "

"This is one of the many palm trees that covered Cococay. You can see the gorgeous beaches and the ocean in the background. What I wouldn't give to be laying in one of those beach chairs right now."

"To go to and from the island of Cococay in the Bahamas, we had to ride in smaller boats and this picture was taken while we were on our way back to the ship from a day in the sun on the island "

"This is a picture of part of the island of Cococay in the Bahamas. It was one of the most peaceful places I have ever been to. "

Written Essay
As I had said in my proposal, my essay is of my five day Caribbean cruise. Before I left for the cruise I had no idea what the places I was going to visit were going to look like. I imagined the typical beaches and turquoise oceans, but it didn't compare to what I saw when I was there. These pictures will forever be reminders of the five amazing days I spent with people I care very much about in places that took my breath away. I am extremely happy that I was able to document my time in such a way that people who were not there with me can hopefully feel like they were. It is difficult to capture some of the most beautiful places on earth in a picture, but I hope that mine captured a fraction of what I saw.

Photo Essay Proposal

When I saw that we had to do the photo essay project I was pretty excited about it. It works out perfectly to shoot my photo essay while I am on vacation in the Caribbean. My best friend from high school decided to get married on a cruise in the Caribbean and I leave in 4 days...so excited! I have never been on a cruise or to the Caribbean before and it will be really cool to have this photo essay to look back on and remember my week in the sun! For the essay project I thought that it would be fitting to shoot and compile my journey on the cruise and through the Caribbean into the photo essay. The hardest part about the assignment is going to be choosing only six pictures from the hundreds I’ll probably take to put in the final essay. Since you all can’t come with me, I hope the essay will make you feel like you were there…

Document Proposal

I have spent quite a bit of time trying to come up with the idea for my document project. I went through a few ideas before settling on one. I had originally thought about doing a document about the progression of an object or event through time, but instead I decided to shoot individual parts of a larger category. I decided to shoot all the different kinds traffic signs that one person comes in contact with on a regular basis. Traffic signs may not be the flashiest things, but still deserving of a photo documentary. I wanted to document traffic signs because they are something that I look at every day, but give little thought too. They are made in all shapes and sizes and with the right light they can look very dynamic. I wanted to take something simple and shoot it in a way that makes it unique.
